A few years back , the Herald reminded its readers of the estimated 1.5 million Roma murdered in Nazi-occupied Europe, an episode that has come to be known in the Romani language as the Porraimos (the “devouring”). Later, it is reported that “The far right is on the march in Hungary, literally. In recent months, hardly a week has gone by without a rally being held by the Magyar Garda or “Hungarian Guard,” their members decked out in black boots and uniforms bearing nationalist symbols last employed by Hungarian fascists during World War II. Their target: Romany (gypsy) criminals and those who want to integrate Romany children into the country’s schools. Their rallies usually take place in communities with a large Roma population, where they style themselves as protectors of ethnic Hungarians.” (Yahoo News, 13 February 2008) Now SOYMB reads that Amnesty International said the EU had “turned a blind eye” to what it called a “serious breach of human rights” towards Europe’s Roma. “There is a clear and systemic programme of EU governments targeting Roma,” said Anneliese Baldaccini, a lawyer at Amnesty’s EU office. Campaign groups have accused Brussels of cowardice when it comes to the Roma. In France [...]

From our friend at Marx and Coca-Cola blog: Last week Barack Obama gave a big speech in Philly on race in America, mostly to distance himself from comments made by his former pastor (apparently when you run for president the opinions of people you know automatically become your own). At the risk of losing my ultra-leftist street cred, I have to say that some of his speech was not all together wrong. It will probably be the only thing intelligent this entire presidential campaign season. Before I get into the speech I should talk about how race is treated in this country. America likes to think of itself as a classless society. Instead we have race, which has become a short-hand for class. Black equals poor, and white equals rich, and we ignore the other races. While it’s true that black people make up a disproportionally percentage of the poor, we ignore the fact that 75% of black people live above the federal poverty line. We also ignore the fact that the majority of people below the poverty line are white. If you are black and have a job, or are white and have trouble paying your rent, you don’t [...]

Herbert Spencer’s concept of Survival of the fittest…Pseudo Scientists, in Economics, Anthropology, History, etc., have have probably erected more obstacles to the clear understanding of reality than any other group, for their misconceptions are tinted with the gild of scholarship. Herbert Spencer, with his Social Statics, was perhaps the most outstanding of those scholars whose opinions and conclusions were accepted on a large scale by peoples on both sides of the Atlantic. In Britain he developed quite a following, but nowhere so avid and devoted desciples as among the burgeoning tycoons in the U.S.A. Following the American Civil War, Spencers psuedo-scientific* concepts were almost universally accepted. Making analogies with Darwinian biology, which hit the world like a cloudburst in 1859, he tried to show that in the same way that nature worked automatically to select her “elite” and thus accomplish the “Survival of the Fittest,” so society could approach perfection to the extent that free play was allowed its “elite.” His statement: “There cannot be more good than that of letting social progress go on unhindered; an immensity of mischeif may be done in… the artificial preservation of those least able to care for themselves,” sets out his position clearly.
