Socialism, true Socialism has never been tried and thus has never failed. Political philosophies masquerading under the name Socialism were and are nothing more than state Capitalism with a bit of Authoritarianism and Totalitarianism thrown in for flavor. It’s state Capitalism that doesn’t work; in fact it fails miserably and creates misery until it does. And the Capitalism that moves along relatively unfettered will also fail, hopefully sooner rather than later, and the misery it has caused humanity will at that time give rise to that defiant human cry “Never again!” But will Socialism replace Capitalism?
As human society continues to evolve the more primitive aspects tend to fall away; giving way to more progressive, higher thoughts on the way society should be structured. These thoughts at some point in the process of human evolution will no doubt turn to Socialism. Human freedom will be the clarion call; no more chains, no more shackles, both literally and figuratively, no more will humans be pitted against one another in order to further the goals and aspirations of the elite few. Humans will tire of being manipulated, physically and psychologically for profit. As human knowledge continues to expand superstitious notions will become increasingly unnecessary. Thus, religions will begin to fade into distant memory. When the noble ideas of human freedom, and scientific advancement begin to coalesce, humanity will be left with what we today call Socialism. Just as human society has moved through phases of hunter gatherer groups, through feudal systems, through various political revolutions and aspects of the industrial revolution each time creating incremental advances in the struggle for human freedom, this evolutionary process will continue until the day arrives when Socialism will emerge out of our collective desire for total human liberation. Human evolution is an ongoing process and thus the process of creating societal normalcy that humans consider satisfactory is also evolving. Although there have been tremendous advancements in technologies and scientific discoveries thus far and many under the Capitalist system, Capitalism will be remembered by future generations as a primitive era in human history compared to the advancements that will burst forth under Socialism.
Socialism is a vision of the future and certainly not a relic of the past as some have erroneously and ignorantly suggested. Remember, Socialism has never been tried; the so-called socialism that many refer too has in fact failed and is in fact a relic and a dreadful memory for many human beings. Actual Socialism, on the other hand is full of new and vibrant ideas, full of hope and peace, it is visionary by it’s very nature, it is forward looking, it is humanistic, it is a kind philosophy, considerate and well meaning, it sees all human beings as integral parts of one universal whole. Socialism embraces technologies that will benefit humans and not exploit them or the other beings that inhabit our wondrous planet, technologies that make life more than just tolerable but actually enjoyable. Socialists embrace technologies that create truly clean energy to power our cities and modes of transportation, technologies that will, under Socialism, surpass anything we currently marvel at. Under Socialism medical advancements will build on and grow well beyond anything we can imagine today. Discoveries will abound, with fresh understandings of earth, the ocean and our solar system. Under Socialism, architectural excellence will abound, art and music will flourish, and human potential will no longer be limited by financial concerns. Science will blossom like never before, no longer dogged by religious fanatics or lack of funding. A Utopia? Perhaps not, but a world much more advanced than the one we currently struggle within.
The Socialists of today and those of the not so distant past are the visionaries of this human future. We are the ones that are planting the seeds of what a future human society on this planet can be. Socialists should therefore remain hopeful and positive people, pointing the way to a better life, a better world. Of course we see the destruction the current system has wrought on humanity and of course exposing the impact of this destruction is apart of what Socialists should do, but it’s much too easy to get caught up in the muck and mire of Capitalism’s affects and forget that we as Socialists offer a better, much more positive future for humanity. We should enjoy life as visionaries and futurists, communicating our ideas in positive and creative ways in order to influence as many minds as possible. As we put forth these noble ideals we will find, just as thoughts can grow and spread within human minds, like the memes that scientist Richard Dawkins posited as aiding the spread of religious thought, our thoughts of a bright future for humanity can also spread. And as the process of human evolution continues to press ahead, the realization of a Socialist society draws ever closer.
